How the task works
Each picture gets one sentence. Grammar and relevance to the picture decide the score.

The task in brief
Questions 1 to 5 each show a picture and two words or phrases. You write ONE sentence about the picture that uses both. You may change the form of the words and use them in any order. You have 8 minutes for all five, so about a minute and a half each.
Same picture, three scores
| Score | Sentence (words: basket / road) | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Two children are walking down a dirt road with a basket of flowers. | One sentence, no errors, both words, matches the picture. |
| 2 | Two children walking on road with basket of flower. | Missing are, a, and -s, but the meaning is clear and it matches the picture. |
| 1 | The basket is walking to the road. | Both words appear, but the meaning does not make sense for the picture. |
ETS rates each answer from 0 to 3 on grammar, task completion, and relevance to the picture. The score levels used on this page follow earlier published versions of the ETS scoring guide.
A four-step routine
- 1
Look first (about 10 seconds). Find the main person or thing, the action, and the place. Then look at the two words.
- 2
Build the sentence around the action. Subject + is/are + -ing is the safest frame: A woman is …, Two men are …
- 3
Fit in both words. Change their form if you need to (build → building, built). Use them in any order.
- 4
Check before you move on. One sentence? Both words? is/are and -s correct? a/an/the? Does every detail match the picture?
Simple and correct beats long and risky. One extra detail, such as a place or a color, is enough.
Describing actions
Is the person doing the action, or is something being done?
The rule: Use is/are + -ing when someone is doing the action, and is being or has been + past participle when something receives it.
Grammar recap
The present continuous (is/are + -ing) describes what is happening now, which is exactly what a picture shows.
Three frames that cover most pictures
| Frame | Use it when | Example |
|---|---|---|
| is / are + -ing | a person or animal is doing something | A man is repairing a bicycle. |
| is / are being + past participle | something is having an action done to it now | A bicycle is being repaired. |
| has / have been + past participle | an earlier action has a visible result | Chairs have been stacked against the wall. |
For pictures with no people (a table of food, an empty room), the passive frames and there is / there are are the most useful.
Common errors in this part
- -ing verb without is or are
A mechanic fixing a car.✓ A mechanic is fixing a car.Without is, there is no main verb. - Active and passive mixed up
The windows are cleaning by a worker.✓ The windows are being cleaned by a worker. The windows receive the action.
Agreement and there is / there are
Singular or plural?
The rule: The verb agrees with the main subject. Use there is with singular or uncountable nouns and there are with plurals.
Grammar recap
The Present Continuous guide also practices is/are agreement and there is / there are.
Subjects that cause mistakes
| Subject | Verb | Example |
|---|---|---|
| one of + plural noun | singular | One of the cooks is wearing a mask. |
| everyone, each | singular | Everyone in the room is standing. |
| noun + of + noun | agrees with the first noun | A box of tools is on the floor. |
| A and B | plural | A man and a dog are running. |
| uncountable noun | singular | The furniture looks new. |
Common errors in this part
- there is or there are error
There have many boxes on the shelf.✓ There are many boxes on the shelf.English uses there are, not there have. - Subject and verb do not agree
One of the passengers are reading.✓ One of the passengers is reading. The subject is one.
Articles and nouns
a, an, the, or nothing? -s or no -s?
The rule: A singular countable noun needs a, an, or the. Uncountable nouns take no -s and no a or an.
Grammar recap
a/an/the and countable or uncountable choices are covered in two guides.
Articles and Determiners → Countable and Uncountable Nouns →
Uncountable words that often appear in picture tasks
To count them, use a unit (a piece of luggage) or a countable word (two suitcases).
Common errors in this part
- Article error
A woman is riding bicycle.✓ A woman is riding a bicycle.Bicycle is countable and singular. - Plural or uncountable noun error
Some furnitures are in the room.✓ Some furniture is in the room.Furniture is uncountable.
Prepositions of place
Where exactly is it?
The rule: Choose the preposition that matches the picture: on, in, around, between, in front of, behind.
Grammar recap
The Prepositions of Place and Direction guide covers point, surface, and space prepositions in full.
Picture-description phrases
| Area of the picture | Phrase |
|---|---|
| front / back | in the foreground, in the background |
| sides | on the left, on the right, on both sides of |
| middle | in the middle of, in the center of |
| relative position | next to, beside, behind, in front of, across from, between, among |
Check left and right from the viewer’s point of view, not the person’s.
Common errors in this part
- Wrong preposition
A cat is sleeping in the sofa.✓ A cat is sleeping on the sofa. The cat is on the surface of the sofa. - Wrong preposition
A girl is sitting among her parents.✓ A girl is sitting between her parents. Two people: between.
Changing the key word
Which form of the key word fits?
The rule: You may change a key word's form. Choose the form the sentence needs, and use -ed for feelings and -ing for causes.
Grammar recap
General word forms (noun, verb, adjective) are not covered by an existing EnglishBridges guide. The -ed and -ing feeling adjectives are.
One key word, several sentences
| Key word | Form | Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| crowd | noun | A crowd is waiting outside the station. |
| crowd | adjective | The station is crowded with travelers. |
| paint | -ing | A worker is painting a fence. |
| paint | past participle | The fence has been painted white. |
| paint | noun | There are cans of paint on the ground. |
If one form makes the sentence hard, try another. The test checks that you used the word appropriately, not that you kept its form.
Common errors in this part
- Wrong form of the key word
A man is giving a present to his friend. (words: man / presentation)✓ A man is giving a presentation to his team. The key word is presentation, not present. - Wrong form of the key word
The audience looks boring.✓ The audience looks bored.People feel bored. A talk is boring.
Linking words
Does a clause or a noun come next?
The rule: While, because, although, before, and until can take a clause. During, because of, and despite take a noun. So that gives a purpose.
Clause or noun?
| + subject and verb | + noun or -ing | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| while she reads | during the meeting | at the same time |
| because it is raining | because of the rain | reason |
| although it is cold | despite the cold | contrast |
| before he leaves | before leaving | earlier |
| until the bus comes | until noon | up to a point |
A word of caution
When a key word is because or so that, choose a reason the picture makes obvious: an umbrella and rain, a coat and snow. A reason you have to imagine can make the sentence irrelevant to the picture.
Common errors in this part
- Wrong linking word
A woman is reading during she waits.✓ A woman is reading while she waits.A clause follows, so use while. - Wrong linking word
People are inside because the rain.✓ People are inside because of the rain.A noun follows, so use because of.
Matching the picture
Can you actually see it?
The rule: Describe only what the picture shows. Leave out reasons, feelings, and stories you cannot see.
Visible or guessed?
| You can see it | You are guessing |
|---|---|
| A man is smiling. | A man is happy because he got a promotion. |
| Two people are shaking hands. | Two people are closing a business deal. |
| A woman is holding a phone to her ear. | A woman is calling her mother. |
| The shelves are empty. | The store is closing down. |
Also check the numbers (two people or three?), what each person is holding, and whether the place is indoors or outdoors.
Common errors in this part
- Does not match the picture
A man is riding a bicycle. (picture: a man pushing a bicycle)✓ A man is pushing a bicycle.Check the exact action. - Goes beyond the picture
The chef is angry because the order is late.✓ The chef is holding a pan over the stove.Anger and lateness cannot be seen.
Following the task rules
Both words, one sentence?
The rule: Use both key words, in any order, in one complete sentence.
Final check before you submit
- 1
Both key words are in the sentence (any form, any order).
- 2
There is exactly one sentence, with a capital letter and a period.
- 3
The sentence has a subject and a main verb (is/are + -ing, not just -ing).
- 4
Every detail matches the picture.
Two short sentences joined with and or while are still one sentence: A man is cooking, and a woman is setting the table.
Common errors in this part
- Not one complete sentence
A dog is in the park. It is running.✓ A dog is running in the park.Join the ideas into one sentence. - A key word is missing
A boy is playing. (words: boy / kite)✓ A boy is flying a kite. Both key words must appear.
