比較級と最上級は、英語であるものを別のものと比べる方法です：cheaper、more expensive、the best、as good as。このガイドではまず基本の形を扱い、次に差の大きさを表すパターンと、2 つの変化が連動することを表すパターンを扱います。

比べ方は 3 つ
どの比較も 1 つの問いから始まります。2 つは同じか、一方がもう一方より上か、それとも一方がグループの中で一番か。

形を作る
その語は -er をつけるか、more を使うか。不規則か。
ルール： 短い語には -er と -est をつけ、長い語には more と most を使います。good、bad、far、little は不規則です。印は 1 つだけ使います：more better とは言いません。

Farther か further か
どちらも距離に使います。further だけが「追加の、さらなる」という意味を持ちます：further details, further questions。
2 音節の語
quiet、simple、narrow、clever のように、両方の形が使える 2 音節語もあります：quieter または more quiet。-y で終わる語はふつう -ier になります。
-ed 形から来た形容詞は、短くても more を使います：more tired, more bored, more worried。

比較級か最上級か
2 つのものを比べているのか、グループから 1 つを選んでいるのか。
ルール： 2 つのものには比較級 + than を、グループの中の 1 つには the + 最上級を使います。最上級の後では、場所や集団には in を、ひとまとまりのものや期間には of を使います。One of the の後には複数名詞が来ます。

ちょうど 2 つのときは、丁寧な書き手は比較級を使います：the taller of the two brothers。日常会話では、ここで最上級もよく使われます。くだけたアメリカ英語では、最上級の後に過去形も使われます：the best movie I ever saw。

2 つは同じか、それとも一方が少ないか
ルール： 同じものには as + 形容詞 + as を、より少ないものには not as … as または less … than を使います。the same as、similar to、different from と言います。

差は大きいか小さいか。倍数か。
ルール： 比較級の前では、大きな差には much、far、a lot を、小さな差には slightly や a bit を使い、very は使いません。倍数には twice、three times、half + as … as を使います。

ルール： The + 比較級 …, the + 比較級 … は 2 つの変化を結びつけます。比較級を繰り返すと、時間とともに変化することを表します。than や as の後では、主動詞に合わせた動詞で比較を終えることができます。
