How Part 6 differs from Part 5

Part 5 tests one sentence at a time. Part 6 embeds the same kinds of blanks inside a short passage, so some questions cannot be solved without reading beyond the sentence that contains the blank.

Feature Part 5 Part 6
Context One isolated sentence A short text such as an email, notice, or memo
Blanks One per sentence Four per text: three words or phrases and one full sentence
Categories tested Word form, grammar, vocabulary, collocation Word form, tense, pronouns, and word choice, often decided by a neighboring sentence, plus connectors and sentence insertion
Can you answer from the blank’s sentence alone? Yes For some blanks; others need a neighboring sentence

Word Form in Context

Does the blank need a noun, verb, adjective, or adverb?

The rule: Decide the blank's job in the sentence first: subject or object needs a noun, the main action needs a verb, describing a noun needs an adjective, describing a verb needs an adverb.

Noun or adjective?

A noun can follow an article (a, an, the) or a possessive, and can be the subject or object of the clause. An adjective sits before a noun or after a linking verb such as be, remain, or become.

Verb or adverb?

A verb is the main action of its own clause. An adverb describes that verb, an adjective, or the whole sentence, and is never itself the main action.

One root, four forms

Noun Verb Adjective Adverb
variety vary various variously
approval approve approved approvingly
production produce productive productively

Part 6 tests this the same way Part 5 does: find the blank’s grammatical job, then pick the matching form of the given root word.

Common errors in this part

  • wrong part of speechPlease fill out the form complete before you submit it.✓ Please fill out the form completely before you submit it.Completely, an adverb, describes how to fill out the form.
  • wrong part of speechThe new schedule caused some confuse among the staff.✓ The new schedule caused some confusion among the staff. After some, the object of caused must be a noun: confusion.
  • wrong part of speechOur sales team is very success at finding new clients.✓ Our sales team is very successful at finding new clients. After is very, the sentence needs an adjective describing the team.
  • wrong part of speechThe manager will careful review each application.✓ The manager will carefully review each application.Between will and review, the word describes the verb, so it must be an adverb.

Word Choice in Context

All four words fit the grammar. Which one fits the meaning of the sentences around it?

The rule: When all four options are the same part of speech, choose by meaning: use a detail in a nearby sentence to rule words out, then check that the answer combines naturally with the words around the blank.

Grammar cannot decide, so the context must

In a word form item, the four options are different parts of speech and grammar picks the answer. In a word choice item, all four options are the same part of speech, so every one of them fits the grammar. The answer depends on meaning, and in Part 6 the detail that decides it is often in another sentence.

Look for a deciding detail

A date, a number, a result, or something that has already happened. If the copier is already broken, a technician comes to repair it, not to deliver it.

Then check the partner words

Some words fit the meaning but not the words next to them: resume business hours, address a problem, hold a session.

Part 5 also has vocabulary items, but its clue is always inside one sentence. In Part 6, read at least one sentence on each side of the blank.

Common errors in this part

  • does not fit the contextThe store is closed for repairs this week. It will close again on Monday.✓ The store is closed for repairs this week. It will reopen on Monday. The store is already closed, so the next change is reopening.
  • does not fit the contextOnly five people came to the talk, so next time we will book a larger room.✓ Only five people came to the talk, so next time we will book a smaller room.Five people is a small group; a larger room conflicts with that detail.
  • breaks a fixed pairingOur team will make the problem by Friday.✓ Our team will solve the problem by Friday.A problem is solved or fixed. Make a problem would mean cause one.
  • does not fit the contextThe printer is working again. Thank you for your patience while it was being installed.✓ The printer is working again. Thank you for your patience while it was being repaired.Working again means it was broken before, so it was repaired, not installed.

Sentence and discourse

Verb Tense and Time Clues

What time clue, maybe in another sentence, fixes this tense?

The rule: Find the time clue, which may sit in another sentence, then match it: a future form for future events, the present perfect for since and for up to now, the simple past for a finished time, and the future or past perfect for an action completed before another point in time.

Read past the blank’s own sentence

In a single sentence, the time clue and the blank are often in the same clause. In a passage, the time clue can sit in the sentence before or after the blank, so a Part 6 tense question can require reading the whole short paragraph once before answering.

Two past events

When a passage names two things that happened in the past, the earlier one usually takes the past perfect: had + participle. With after or before, the simple past is also accepted.

An ongoing action

An action that started in the past and continues now, often signaled by since or for, takes the present perfect (continuous): has/have been + -ing.

Common errors in this part

  • ignores the time clueThe cafe has opened in 2018.✓ The cafe opened in 2018.A finished past time (in 2018) takes the simple past, not the present perfect.
  • ignores the time clueWe work on this project since last spring.✓ We have been working on this project since last spring.Since last spring describes an activity continuing up to now.
  • ignores the time clueBy next Friday, the painters finish the lobby.✓ By next Friday, the painters will have finished the lobby. An action completed before a future point takes the future perfect.
  • wrong aspectBy the time the guests arrived, the chef already cooked dinner.✓ By the time the guests arrived, the chef had already cooked dinner. The cooking was finished before the guests arrived, so the earlier action takes the past perfect.

Pronoun Reference

Which noun does this pronoun replace, and what form does the blank need?

The rule: Find the exact noun the pronoun replaces and match its number, person, and gender. Then choose the form the blank needs: subject, object, possessive, or reflexive.

Find the exact word being replaced

Locate the specific noun the pronoun stands for, not just any nearby noun on the same general topic. Then match three things: number (singular or plural), grammatical person, and, for a named individual, gender.

Antecedent Correct pronoun
a company, a product, a document (singular thing) it / its
several people, companies, or items (plural) they / their / them
a named man he / his
a named woman she / her

Then choose the form

Job in the sentence Singular thing Plural
Subject it they
Object it them
Possessive before a noun its (not it’s) their
Reflexive itself themselves (not theirselves)

Common errors in this part

  • does not agree in numberThe new chairs arrived today. It will be placed in the meeting room.✓ The new chairs arrived today. They will be placed in the meeting room. They agrees with the plural noun chairs.
  • wrong pronoun formPlease give the keys to Ms. Tan or I before you leave.✓ Please give the keys to Ms. Tan or me before you leave. After the preposition to, the object form me is needed.
  • wrong pronoun formThe hotel updated it's cancellation policy.✓ The hotel updated its cancellation policy. Its is the possessive form; it's means it is.
  • wrong genderMr. Cole will retire in May. She has worked here for 25 years.✓ Mr. Cole will retire in May. He has worked here for 25 years. He agrees with Mr. Cole, the man named in the first sentence.

Connecting Words

What logical relationship connects these two sentences?

The rule: Identify the relationship between the two ideas (contrast, result, addition, or condition), then choose a connector that signals it. Conjunctions such as although need a clause of their own and cannot stand alone before a comma.

Four relationships cover most items

however / nevertheless (contrast)therefore / as a result / consequently (result)in addition / furthermore (addition)otherwise (condition)

A smaller group of connectors, such as although and even though, are conjunctions rather than transition adverbs. They must attach to a clause inside the same sentence and cannot open a new, free-standing sentence on their own.

Common errors in this part

  • wrong logical relationshipThe train was delayed. However, we missed the opening speech.✓ The train was delayed. As a result, we missed the opening speech.Missing the speech was caused by the delay, so a result connector is needed.
  • wrong sentence roleThe price is high. Even though, many customers buy it.✓ The price is high. However, many customers buy it.Even though needs its own clause; it cannot stand alone before a comma.
  • wrong logical relationshipThe hotel has a pool. However, it offers a free airport shuttle.✓ The hotel has a pool. In addition, it offers a free airport shuttle. Both sentences list features of the hotel, so an addition connector is needed.
  • wrong logical relationshipPlease arrive by 9 a.m. Therefore, you may not get a seat.✓ Please arrive by 9 a.m. Otherwise, you may not get a seat. The second sentence says what happens if you do not arrive on time, which is the meaning of otherwise.

Discourse-level

Sentence Insertion

Which sentence continues both the topic and the logic here?

The rule: The inserted sentence must connect to the sentences before and after it, agree with the facts and timeline of the passage, and supply the specific detail the paragraph needs.

A skill unique to Part 6

Sentence insertion does not appear in TOEIC Part 5. Instead of choosing a word, you choose a full sentence, and every option is grammatically correct English. The only real test is whether the sentence fits this exact spot in this exact passage.

Keep reading past the blank

The sentence after the blank often reacts to, or depends on, information the correct answer must supply.

Reject “true but wrong”

An off-topic or overly general option can be a completely true sentence about the company. That does not make it the right answer here.

Check for contradictions

Some wrong options conflict with a fact in the passage: an item that has shipped cannot be out of stock, and a line that is not built yet cannot have opened.

Follow the pointer words

Words like this period, the new policy, or do so in the next sentence point back to something. The correct sentence is the one that supplies it.

Common errors in this part

  • introduces unsupported informationThe museum shop sells postcards and books.✓ Tours in Spanish will now run every Saturday at 11 a.m.In a notice announcing new tour times, the missing sentence has to continue the tour topic, not describe the shop.
  • too general to complete the paragraphGood customer service is important to every business.✓ Our help desk will now answer calls until 9 p.m. on weekdays.A notice about longer help desk hours needs the specific new hours, not a general statement.
  • contradicts the passageThe sale ended last Sunday.✓ The sale runs through this Sunday only. When the next sentence invites customers to shop this weekend, a sentence saying the sale has ended conflicts with it.
  • breaks subject continuityOur competitors have also raised their prices.✓ The new prices will apply to all orders placed after May 1.A paragraph explaining our own price change needs its start date; a sentence about competitors breaks the thread.

Self-check

Is each sentence correct? Tap to see the answer. The part label tells you where to look if you were not sure.

Part 1The team handled the complaint professionally.

Correct. Professionally, an adverb, describes how the team handled it.

Part 1We need a quick decide on the budget.

Incorrect. After the adjective quick, the noun decision is needed.

Part 2Sales doubled this year. Because of this drop, we are hiring more staff.

Incorrect. Doubled sales are an increase, not a drop; the context calls for a word like growth.

Part 3Our office moved to Toronto in 2022.

Correct. A finished past time (in 2022) takes the simple past.

Part 4Please send the invoices to Mr. Ruiz and I.

Incorrect. After to, the object form me is needed: Mr. Ruiz and me.

Part 4The museum announced its new opening hours yesterday.

Correct. Its is the possessive form for the singular noun museum.

Part 5The meeting ran long. Although, we finished every item on the agenda.

Incorrect. Although needs its own clause. However fits here.

Part 6The gym will close for cleaning on Sunday. The gym was built in 2005. Members may use the pool as usual.

Incorrect. The middle sentence is an unrelated fact. The paragraph needs a detail that connects the closure to the pool, such as that only the main floor will close.
