Depois de uma exigência ou sugestão, o verbo fica na forma base pura: I suggest that he go, it is essential that she be there. Em situações irreais, o inglês usa were e outras formas do passado: if I were you, it’s time we left.

|---|---|---|
| Uma exigência, proposta ou requisito (verbo) | that + forma base | The board proposed that the plan be delayed. |
| Algo essencial ou importante (adjetivo) | that + forma base or for + to | It is crucial that every voter bring ID. |
| Algo imaginado ou que não é verdade agora | were / past form | If I were in charge, I would hire more staff. |
| Arrependimento sobre o passado | had + particípio passado | I wish we had left earlier. |
| Uma condição formal sem if | Should / Had / Were + subject | Should the flight be canceled, you will get a voucher. |
O inglês britânico costuma usar should nesse padrão (that he should go) e, na fala informal, um tempo verbal normal (that he goes).
A regra: Depois de suggest, recommend, insist, demand e propose, use that + sujeito + forma base.
Verbos que acionam that + forma base
Qual padrão o verbo usa?
| Verbo | that + forma base | -ing | objeto + to |
|---|---|---|---|
| suggest, recommend | ✓ | ✓ | ✗ |
| insist | ✓ | on + -ing | ✗ |
| demand | ✓ | ✗ | ✗ |
| ask, advise, require, urge | ✓ | ✗ | ✓ |
| want, encourage, expect, allow | ✗ | ✗ | ✓ |
The nurse suggested that I rest. / The nurse suggested resting.
The nurse wanted me to rest.
Erros comuns nesta parte
Our tutor suggested us to join a study group.✓ Our tutor suggested that we join a study group.Suggest não usa objeto + to.
My boss wants that I travel less.✓ My boss wants me to travel less.Want usa objeto + infinitivo com to. - infinitivo com to dentro da oração com that
The bank asks that customers to show ID.✓ The bank asks that customers show ID.Sem to depois de that.
Essential, vital, the requirement that
Adjetivos
Dois padrões, o mesmo sentido
| Padrão | Exemplo |
|---|---|
| It is + adjetivo + that + forma base | It is essential that the fridge stay closed. |
| It is + adjetivo + for + pessoa + infinitivo com to | It is essential for the fridge to stay closed. |
Substantivos
We accepted the condition that the loan be repaid within a year.
Antes de that, confira a classe da palavra. Her insistence that, e não her insist that. The request that, e não the requested that.
Erros comuns nesta parte
- oração com that e for + to misturados
It is important for children get enough sleep.✓ It is important for children to get enough sleep. For + pessoa precisa de to. - forma -ing dentro da oração com that
It is essential that the team leaving on time.✓ It is essential that the team leave on time. That + forma base, não -ing.
The require that applicants be over 18 is new.✓ The requirement that applicants be over 18 is new.Antes de that, use um substantivo.
A forma base: negativas, voz passiva, tempo passado
|---|---|---|
| Afirmativa | forma base | The panel recommended that she apply again. |
| Negativa | not + forma base | The panel recommended that she not apply again. |
| Passiva | be + particípio passado | The panel recommended that her file be reviewed. |
| Passiva negativa | not be + particípio passado | The panel recommended that her file not be closed. |
| Significado | Exemplo |
|---|---|
| suggest = propor | The tutor suggested that we start earlier. |
| suggest = mostrar | The tests suggested that the water was safe. |
| insist = exigir | My aunt insisted that I take the larger room. |
| insist = afirmar | My aunt insisted that she had locked the door. |
Erros comuns nesta parte
- forma negativa errada
We ask that you don't to park here.✓ We ask that you not park here. Not + forma base. - forma passiva errada
The rules require that all bags be check.✓ The rules require that all bags be checked.Be + particípio passado. - subjuntivo onde se relata um fato
The tests suggest that the bridge be unsafe.✓ The tests suggest that the bridge is unsafe.Aqui, suggest significa ‘mostrar’.
Were e o passado irreal
A situação é imaginada?
It's time e would rather também pedem uma forma do passado.
|---|---|---|
| if | If we lived closer, we would visit more. | If we had lived closer, we would have visited more. |
| wish / if only | I wish it were Friday. | If only I had saved the file. |
| as if / as though | She speaks as if she owned the place. | He looked as though he had run a marathon. |
| it’s time | It’s time we cleaned the garage. | |
| would rather | I’d rather you called first. | I’d rather you had told me. |
Were ou was?
Na conversa, muitos falantes dizem if I was. Na escrita formal, e na expressão fixa if I were you, use were com todos os sujeitos.
I wish the printer would work. (someone or something else)
I wish I could fix it. (yourself)
Erros comuns nesta parte
- would na oração irreal
If I would have more money, I would buy a bike.✓ If I had more money, I would buy a bike.
It's time we start the meeting.✓ It's time we started the meeting. It's time + forma do passado.

Expressões fixas como be that as it may e if need be mantêm sua forma antiga.
Condições com inversão
| Com if | Inversão formal | Observação |
|---|---|---|
| If you have questions, … | Should you have questions, … | Should + sujeito + forma base |
| If I had known, … | Had I known, … | Had + sujeito + particípio passado |
| If it were not for …, … | Were it not for …, … | Were + sujeito + not for |
| If prices were to rise, … | Were prices to rise, … | Were + sujeito + infinitivo com to |
As negativas não se contraem nesse padrão: Had it not been for, e não Hadn’t it been for.
Expressões fixas
The roads were icy. Be that as it may, the bus left on time.
Label every cable lest someone unplug the wrong one.
Lest é formal e bastante raro. No inglês do dia a dia, so that … not ou in case são mais comuns.
Erros comuns nesta parte
- inversão formal malformada
Should you needed help, call me.✓ Should you need help, call me.Should + forma base. - expressão fixa alterada
Come what will, we won't give up.✓ Come what may, we won't give up.A expressão é fixa. - inversão formal malformada
