|---|---|
| Pessoa, coisa ou posse? Há um substantivo antes da oração? | who, which, whose ou what (Parte 1) |
| A oração está completa sem a palavra? | where, when, why, ou which e that (Parte 2) |
| É sujeito ou objeto da própria oração? | se o pronome pode ser omitido (Parte 3) |
| Identifica qual, ou acrescenta uma informação extra? | sem vírgulas, ou vírgulas obrigatórias (Parte 4) |
| O substantivo pratica a ação ou a recebe? | -ing ou particípio passado (Parte 5) |
- 1
Orações explicativas precisam de vírgulas e nunca usam that (Parte 4).
A Parte 5 trata de orações reduzidas, concordância verbal e preposições no inglês formal.
Who, which, whose e what
Whose indica posse. What significa the thing that, por isso só é usado quando não há substantivo antes dele.
| Palavra | Uso | Exemplo |
|---|---|---|
| who | pessoas | The woman who called is my sister. |
| which | coisas | The car which broke down is mine. |
| that | pessoas ou coisas (só restritivas) | The book that I read was excellent. |
| whom | objeto da oração, formal | The man whom I met was very kind. |
| whose | posse, pessoas ou coisas | The woman whose car broke down called a mechanic. |
What: sem substantivo antes
Não diga
Everything what I own fits in one bag.Show me that you bought.
Diga
Everything that I own fits in one bag.
Show me what you bought.
Na fala do dia a dia, who costuma substituir whom. Whom nunca é o sujeito: the man who called, e não the man whom called.
Erros comuns nesta parte
- o pronome relativo errado
The dentist which cleaned my teeth was very gentle.✓ The dentist who cleaned my teeth was very gentle.Who se refere a uma pessoa. - what usado no lugar de that ou which
The best thing what happened this year was my new job.✓ The best thing that happened this year was my new job.Thing já é o substantivo, então use that. - who, who's ou who his usado no lugar de whose
I have a cousin who his wife is a pilot.✓ I have a cousin whose wife is a pilot.Whose substitui who his.
Mais: that com superlativos e substantivos genéricos
That é especialmente comum depois de superlativos e de palavras como the only, the first e everything: This is the best book that I have ever read. He was the only one that noticed.
Where, when ou which?
|---|---|---|
| where | um lugar | This is the cafe where we first met. |
| when | um momento | I remember the day when we graduated. |
| why | uma razão | That’s the reason why she left early. |
Where ou which?
| A oração sem a palavra | Uso | Exemplo |
|---|---|---|
| completa: we met there | where | the city where we met |
| precisa de um objeto: we visited it | that, which, or no word | the city (that) we visited |
| precisa de uma preposição: we stayed in it | the preposition at the end, or in which | the hotel (that) we stayed in / the hotel in which we stayed |
O mesmo teste funciona para why: the reason why he left (completa), mas the reason (that) he gave (gave precisa de um objeto).
Erros comuns nesta parte
Gyeongju is a city where I really want to visit.✓ Gyeongju is a city (that) I really want to visit.
The chair which I was sitting is broken.✓ The chair (that) I was sitting on is broken.Sit precisa de on. - o advérbio relativo errado
I'll never forget the week where I started this job.✓ I'll never forget the week when I started this job.Week é um momento.
Omitindo o pronome
O sujeito fica. O objeto pode sair.
| Função | Pode omitir? | Exemplo |
|---|---|---|
| sujeito da oração | não | The man who called is my uncle. |
| objeto da oração | sim | The book (that) I read was excellent. |
Pronomes duplicados
Não diga
The man who he lives here is my neighbor. The book that I read it was excellent.
Diga
The man who lives here is my neighbor.
The book that I read was excellent.
Erros comuns nesta parte
There are some parents want a later start time.✓ There are some parents who want a later start time.O pronome é o sujeito de want, então ele fica. - um pronome duplicado
The bike that I borrowed it had a flat tire.✓ The bike (that) I borrowed had a flat tire. That já representa the bike. - um pronome duplicado
The coach who she trains us is strict.✓ The coach who trains us is strict.Who já representa the coach.
| Exemplo |
|---|---|---|
| restritiva: identifica qual | não | The students who studied hard passed. (only those students) |
| explicativa: acrescenta um fato | sim | The students, who studied hard, passed. (all of them) |
| which para uma ideia inteira | sim | He forgot my birthday, which upset me. |
Uma oração explicativa nunca usa that e sempre mantém o pronome, mesmo como objeto: my old car, which I sold last year.
Erros comuns nesta parte
My father who is a farmer grows rice.✓ My father, who is a farmer, grows rice.
Jeju, that is an island, is popular with hikers.✓ Jeju, which is an island, is popular with hikers.
It rained all weekend, that ruined our plans.✓ It rained all weekend, which ruined our plans.Which se refere à ideia inteira.
Mais: some of whom, all of which
Depois de um quantificador em uma oração explicativa, use whom para pessoas e which para coisas: I have two brothers, both of whom live abroad. She wrote three novels, all of which were translated.
|---|---|---|
| the man who is standing near the door | the man standing near the door | he stands: -ing |
| the book that was written by her | the book written by her | someone wrote it: particípio passado |
Concordância e preposições
| Ponto | Exemplo |
|---|---|
| o verbo concorda com o substantivo a que o pronome se refere | people who live here / a person who lives here |
| formal: preposição antes de whom ou which | the colleague with whom I worked / the village in which they grew up |
That e who não vêm depois de preposição nesse padrão.
Erros comuns nesta parte
- uma oração reduzida só pela metade
The woman who waiting outside is my aunt.✓ The woman waiting outside is my aunt.Tire who e is, ou mantenha os dois. - o particípio errado
The money stealing from the bank was never found.✓ The money stolen from the bank was never found.
