英語の疑問文と否定文は、助動詞という小さな語で動いています。疑問文は助動詞を主語の前に置き、否定文はその後に not を付け、付加疑問は文末でそれを繰り返します。動詞に助動詞がないときは、英語は do を借ります。

まず助動詞を見つけましょう。このガイドのどの形も、助動詞を移動させるか、not を付けるか、繰り返すかのどれかです。

移動させるか、do を借りるか
swims の -s や called の過去形は助動詞（does、did）に移るので、本動詞は原形に戻ります。
現在進行形

直接疑問文
疑問文にはどの助動詞が必要で、その後にはどの形が来るか
ルール： 主語の前に助動詞を置きます。be、have、法助動詞はそのまま前に移り、その他の動詞には do、does、did を加えます。do、does、did の後の本動詞は原形です。

所有の have
have が本動詞のときは Do you have a pen? が最も無難な疑問文です。Have you got a pen? も、特にイギリス英語でよく使われます。Have you a pen? は古風に聞こえます。
平叙文の形の疑問
話し言葉では、上昇調で言う平叙文（You’re leaving already?）が驚きを表したり、本当だと思うことを確認したりします。くだけた言い方で、普通の疑問文の語順の代わりにはなりません。

主語の疑問文と目的語の疑問文
疑問詞は主語か、目的語か
ルール： 疑問詞が主語なら、do を使わず平叙文の語順にします。目的語なら、普通の疑問文の語順にします。

主語の疑問文にも、動詞そのものに属する助動詞は入ります。Who can help? What is happening? Who has seen this film? 省くのは余分な do だけです。

疑問が別の文の中に入っているか
ルール： Can you tell me、Do you know、I wonder、asked などの前置きの後は、do を使わず平叙文の語順にします。Yes/No 疑問文には if か whether を加えます。

to の前（whether to stay）と前置詞の後（a debate about whether it works）では、if ではなく whether を使います。

状況が今も変わっていなければ、時制はそのままでもかまいません。She asked where I live（今もそこに住んでいる）。
Do you know …? か … do you think? か
Do you know where he lives? は事実を尋ねていて、yes か no で答えられます。Where do you think he lives? は意見を尋ねているので、疑問詞が先頭に移り、do you think が疑問の部分になります。

否定文
not を付ける助動詞はあるか、すでに否定語があるか
ルール： not は助動詞の後に置くか、don’t、doesn’t、didn’t ＋原形を使います。1 つの節に否定は 1 つにし、否定疑問文には事実で答えます。

no で始まる語を使う形は、より改まった、または強調した言い方になることが多いです。話し言葉で二重否定を使う英語の変種もありますが、書き言葉や試験では標準的ではありません。
否定疑問文への答え方

yes と no は事実に従う
言語によっては、yes が「あなたの言う通り」という意味になります。英語では yes と no は後に続く事実と一致するので、yes の後は必ず肯定、no の後は必ず否定です。
I don’t think
英語では普通 think の側を否定にします。I don’t think it will rain の方が I think it won’t rain より自然ですが、どちらも正しい英語です。believe、expect、suppose も同じです。

付加疑問
助動詞は何か、文は肯定か否定か
ルール： 助動詞を繰り返し（または do、does、did を使い）、代名詞を付けます。普通は極性を入れ替え、肯定文には否定の付加疑問、否定文には肯定の付加疑問を付けます。

イントネーション
付加疑問を下降調で言うと、相手の同意を期待していることを表します（It’s cold, isn’t it?）。上昇調なら本当の質問で、確信がないことを表します。
同じ極性の付加疑問
肯定文に肯定の付加疑問を付ける形（So you’re moving to Canada, are you?）もありますが、確認ではなく驚きや関心を表します。診断テストでは普通の逆極性の形を出題しています。
