Play: Not Just for Children

Play is one of the first things we do in life, and one of the first things many of us give up. Children play to explore, test ideas, make friends, and learn how the world works. Adults often treat play as a reward for finishing their work, yet a game with friends, a song on the guitar, or a silly joke can lift a bad day and bring people closer.

Play also teaches us how to behave. Games only work when people play fair and play by the rules, and we quickly notice when someone plays dirty or plays favorites. The language of play spills into everyday life too. We play it safe with money, play it by ear on a free weekend, and call an easy task child’s play. And as the old saying warns, all work and no play is not good for anyone.

This page explores the idea of play and the language we use to talk about it. You will find word forms, common mistakes, collocations, preposition patterns, expressions from “child’s play” to “play devil’s advocate,” synonyms and antonyms, quotations, interactive activities, discussion questions, and a practice text for shadow reading and typing.

Common mistakes

  • Play, do, or go? Use play with games and ball sports (play chess, play tennis), do with many other activities (do yoga, do karate), and go with -ing activities (go swimming, go skiing).
  • Instruments usually take the. Say play the piano or play the guitar. American English often drops it (play piano). Sports never take the: play soccer, not play the soccer.
  • Adults hang out more than they play. In some languages one verb covers both. In English, play with friends sounds like children’s games. For adults meeting socially, say hang out or meet up, unless there is a game.
  • Play can be countable or uncountable. Children learn through play (uncountable: activity for fun). We saw a play (countable: a theater performance).
  • Play a game, not play a play. Game is the activity with rules; play is usually the verb: Let’s play a game. The writer of a play is a playwright, not a playwriter.

Shadow Reading and Typing: Game Night

This short story uses many of the expressions on this page. Use it for shadow reading (reading aloud along with a model) and for typing practice.

Last year, my friends and I started a weekly game night. At first, I wanted to play it safe and just watch. My friend laughed and said, “Come on, it’s child’s play.” So I joined in, and I’m glad I did.

The first game was a card game. I didn’t know the rules, so I decided to play it by ear. One friend played dumb about the rules and then won easily. Everyone laughed, but after that we agreed to play fair and play by the rules. We even wrote the rules on a big sheet of paper.

Some weeks, the games got very serious. My cousin plays hardball and plays for keeps, even in a silly word game. Another friend loves to play devil’s advocate and argue about every rule. I usually play the fool and make everyone laugh. Nobody plays favorites, and nobody plays dirty, so it stays fun.

Game night now plays a big role in my week. After long days at work, it reminds me that all work and no play is not good for anyone. I’ve become more playful, too, and I worry less about small things. And I’ve learned that if you play your cards right, you can win and still have fun.

How to practice

  1. Read the text silently once and check any expressions you are unsure of.
  2. Read it aloud slowly, one sentence at a time. On the typing page, the Listen button reads each line with your device’s voice, so you can listen first and then repeat.
  3. Shadow: read aloud again at a natural speed, trying to keep a steady rhythm without stopping.
  4. Record yourself, listen back, and note one sentence to practice again.
  5. Type it on the typing page below and check your speed and accuracy.

Quotations

Use these as warm-ups. Read the quotation, then discuss the question.

“Man only plays when in the full meaning of the word he is a man, and he is only completely a man when he plays.”

Friedrich Schiller, Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man, Letter 15 (1795), in a public-domain English translation

The German poet and philosopher argues that play, not work or duty alone, is where people are most fully human. “Man” here means all people.
Warm-up: When do you feel most like yourself: at work, at rest, or at play?

“Play is older than culture.”

Johan Huizinga, Homo Ludens (1938; English translation 1949), opening line

The Dutch historian points out that animals played long before humans existed, so play cannot be something human culture invented.
Warm-up: What games or kinds of play do you think are found in every culture?
Translations: 游戏比文化更古老。 | 遊びは文化よりも古い。 | 놀이는 문화보다 오래되었다. | खेल संस्कृति से भी पुराना है। | اللعب أقدم من الثقافة. | Игра старше культуры. | El juego es más antiguo que la cultura. | Le jeu est plus ancien que la culture.

“Men grow old because they stop playing, and not conversely.”

G. Stanley Hall, Adolescence (1904)

This is the early source of a famous saying often credited to George Bernard Shaw: “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” Not conversely means not the other way around.
Warm-up: Do the older people you know still play? In what ways?
