three chairs: 하나씩 셈

셀 수 있음

따로따로인 단위

one chair, three chairs

furniture: 셀 수 없는 하나의 덩어리

셀 수 없음

덩어리 또는 전체

some furniture, never three furnitures

three glasses of water: 단위를 셈

단위 세기

숫자는 단위에 붙는다

three glasses of water

셀 수 있음 셀 수 없음
복수형이 있음: chair, chairs 복수형 없음: furnitures가 아니라 furniture
a나 an을 씀: a chair a나 an 없음: a furniture라고 하지 않음
숫자를 씀: three chairs 앞에 숫자 없음: three furniture라고 하지 않음
many, a few, several과 씀 much, a little, little과 씀
복수 동사: the chairs are 단수 동사: the furniture is
  1. 1
  3. 3
셀 수 없는 것도 담기는 단위를 세면 수를 나타낼 수 있습니다. two pieces of advice, three slices of bread.
  4. 4
자주 쓰는 명사 중에는 두 무리에 모두 속하면서 각각 의미가 다른 것이 있습니다. 이런 단어는 어떤 형태를 고르느냐가 어떤 의미인지를 독자에게 알려 줍니다.

  • 셀 수 없는 명사 앞의 a나 anI need an advice about my essay.✓ I need some advice about my essay.advice에는 a나 an을 쓰지 않습니다.

문법

수량사와 수 일치

수량사와 동사가 명사와 맞나요?

규칙: 명사에 맞게 수량사를 고르고, 셀 수 없는 명사에는 단수 동사를 쓰세요.

수량사를 명사에 맞추기

셀 수 없음 셀 수 있는 명사의 복수형 둘 다
much information many books some, any
a little time a few notebooks a lot of, plenty of
little patience few students no, enough, more
less noise fewer cars
an amount of money a number of people
How much luggage? How many bags?

일상적인 긍정문에서는 much보다 a lot of가 더 자연스럽습니다. much는 주로 의문문, 부정문, 격식 있는 글에 씁니다. 명사가 셀 수 있는지 확실하지 않을 때는 a lot of가 거의 언제나 안전합니다.

셀 수 없으면 단수

양이 아무리 많아도 셀 수 없는 명사는 문법적으로 단수입니다.

문장 이유
The scenery is spectacular. scenery는 셀 수 없음
All the equipment has been checked. 동사는 equipment에 맞춤
There is a lot of noise outside. there are가 아니라 there is
Economics is a difficult subject. -s로 끝나지만 단수

-s로 끝나지만 단수인 명사

newseconomicsmathematicsphysicspoliticsethicslinguisticsathletics

statistics에는 두 가지 뜻이 있습니다. Statistics is a hard subject는 학문 분야를, the statistics were surprising은 수치를 뜻합니다.

이 부분의 흔한 오류

  • 셀 수 없는 명사에 셀 수 있는 명사용 수량사He gave me many good advices.✓ He gave me a lot of good advice.advice는 셀 수 없습니다. many가 아니라 a lot of를 쓰세요.
  • 셀 수 없는 명사에 복수 동사The traffic were very bad this morning.✓ The traffic was very bad this morning.셀 수 없는 명사에는 단수 동사를 씁니다.
  • 셀 수 없는 명사에 복수 동사Mathematics are my weakest subject.✓ Mathematics is my weakest subject.-s로 끝나는 학과명은 단수입니다.

문법

셀 수 없는 것 세기

셀 수 없는 것은 어떻게 세나요?

규칙: 셀 수 없는 명사는 단위로 셉니다. 숫자와 복수형은 단위어에 붙고, of 뒤의 명사는 그대로입니다.

복수형은 단위로 옮겨 간다

이렇게 말고 이렇게
two breads two loaves of bread
three luggages three pieces of luggage
two waters two glasses of water
two pieces of advices two pieces of advice

단위어 고르기

단위 함께 쓰는 명사
a piece of advice, information, furniture, news, cake, luggage, equipment
a slice of bread, cheese, cake, toast, pizza, meat
a loaf of bread
a grain of rice, sand, salt, truth
a bar of chocolate, soap, gold
a sheet of paper, glass, metal
an item / article of clothing, news, furniture
a glass / cup / bottle / carton of water, coffee, tea, milk, juice
a spoonful of sugar, syrup, medicine
a bag / jar / can / tube of flour, honey, tuna, toothpaste
a drop of blood, oil, rain

헷갈릴 때는

piece는 두루 쓰이는 단위입니다. 더 알맞은 말이 없으면 a piece of가 대개 무난합니다.

이 부분의 흔한 오류

  • 셀 수 없는 명사 앞의 숫자She bought three breads for the party.✓ She bought three loaves of bread for the party.단위를 세세요: loaves.
  • 잘못된 단위어Pass me a bar of paper, please.✓ Pass me a sheet of paper, please.paper는 sheet로 셉니다.
  • 복수 -s를 엉뚱한 단어에 붙임We ordered three cups of coffees.✓ We ordered three cups of coffee.

She has many experiences in marketing.✓ She has a lot of experience in marketing.능력으로서의 experience는 셀 수 없습니다.
  • 하나의 대상을 셀 수 없게 씀Climbing the volcano was amazing experience.✓ Climbing the volcano was an amazing experience.한 번의 일: an experience.

furniture chair, desk, sofa, bookshelf 아니요
clothing shirt, dress, coat, scarf 아니요
equipment camera, tent, helmet, laptop 아니요
food bread, rice, soup, salad 아니요 (음식 종류를 말할 때는 예외)
vocabulary word, phrase, idiom 아니요
vehicle car, bus, truck, bicycle 예
instrument piano, violin, drum 예
animal dog, cat, horse 예

이것은 강한 경향일 뿐 규칙은 아닙니다. 셀 수 있는 범주어도 있고, 셀 수 없는 구성원 단어도 있습니다 (milk는 음료의 한 종류입니다).

가장 많이 틀리는 네 가지

이렇게 말고 이렇게 이유
Biryani is my favorite menu. my favorite dish menu는 전체 목록이지 그 안의 한 품목이 아님
It is one of my bucket lists. one item on my bucket list 목록은 하나이고 항목이 여러 개임
I memorize ten vocabularies a day. ten vocabulary words vocabulary는 내가 아는 단어 전체임
I’ll make my schedule as many as possible. I’ll schedule as many classes as possible schedule은 하나의 계획이고, 세는 것은 수업임

반대 방향의 오류

범주어가 맞고 구성원 단어로는 너무 좁은 경우도 있습니다. The store sells furniture는 전체 품목을 아우르고, 일반적인 장보기를 말할 때는 요리 이름을 늘어놓기보다 I need to buy some food for the trip이 낫습니다.

유용한 습관: 범주 전체를 말할 때는 범주어를 쓰고 셀 수 없는 그대로 두세요. 하나를 말할 때는 그 대상의 이름을 말하세요.

이 부분의 흔한 오류

  • 하나의 대상에 범주어를 씀Sushi is my favorite menu.✓ Sushi is my favorite dish.menu는 전체 목록입니다.
  • 하나의 대상에 범주어를 씀Learning to surf is one of my bucket lists.✓ Learning to surf is one item on my bucket list.목록은 하나, 항목은 여러 개.
  • 셀 수 없는 명사에 복수 -sI studied fifty new vocabularies last week.✓ I studied fifty new vocabulary words last week.vocabulary는 단어 전체입니다.
