英語は名詞を可算名詞と不可算名詞の 2 つに分けますが、この区別はほかの言語と必ずしも一致しません。advice、furniture、information のような語は多くの学習者にとって数えられるように感じられますが、英語ではまったく数えられません。このガイドでは、どの名詞が不可算か、それと一緒に使う語、それでも数を表す方法、意味によって変わる名詞、そして menu や vocabulary のようなカテゴリーの語を扱います。

基本の考え方
可算名詞は、単位に分けて数えられるものを表します。不可算名詞は、ひとまとまりや全体として扱われ、単位をもたないものを表します。

可算かどうかは英語の語の性質で、物そのものの性質ではありません。chairs と furniture は同じ物を指すことがありますが、数えられるのは chair だけです。多くの言語はこの線を別の場所に引くので、これらの誤りは不注意ではなく体系的なものです。

3 つの制限はいつもセットです。不可算名詞には複数形がなく、a や an も付かず、前に数も置けません。1 つを覚えれば残り 2 つもわかります。

日常の肯定文では、much より a lot of のほうが自然です。much は主に疑問文、否定文、改まった文章で使います。名詞が可算かどうかわからないときは、a lot of がほぼいつでも安全です。
不可算は単数扱い
量がどれほど多くても、不可算名詞は文法上単数です。

不可算の意味は一般的な物質や概念です。可算の意味はその一人分、一つ、一回です。指さして数を付けられるなら可算です。
fish はふつう複数でも形が変わりません: six fish。fishes は主に異なる魚の種類を指すときに使います。

カテゴリーの語とメンバーの語
グループ全体のことですか、その中の一つのことですか。
ルール: カテゴリーの語はグループ全体を表し、不可算のことが多いです。グループの中の一つについて言うときはメンバーの語を使います。

上位語（hypernym）は広いカテゴリーを表す語です。下位語（hyponym）はそのカテゴリーの具体的なメンバーです。

逆方向の誤り
カテゴリーの語が正しく、メンバーの語では狭すぎることもあります。The store sells furniture は品ぞろえ全体を表し、一般的な買い物のことなら、料理を並べるより I need to buy some food for the trip のほうが適切です。
役に立つ習慣: カテゴリー全体のことならカテゴリーの語を使い、不可算のままにします。一つのものなら、そのものの名前を言います。
