基本の考え方：状況はどのくらい現実的か？
どの時制を選ぶかで、その状況がどのくらい起こりそうだと考えているかが読み手に伝わります。同じ if の文でも、時制が変わると意味が変わります。

ルール： 時制は状況の起こりやすさを示します。現実の可能性と事実には if のあとに現在形、結果に will または現在形を使い、想像上のことには if のあとに過去形、結果に would を使います。

ここでの if のあとの過去形は、過去のことを表しません。話し手がその状況を想像上のこと、または起こりにくいことと見ているという意味です。

補足：if I was と、if のあとの will
母語話者の多くは、くだけた会話で if I was you と言います。書き言葉や試験では were を使います。Will が if のあとに来るのは、「喜んで～する」という意味（be willing）のときや、結果のほうが時間的に先に起こるときです。例：If you will wait here, I’ll get the manager、If it will help, I’ll stay late。

now、today、yesterday、last year などの時を表す語に注目してください。それぞれの節にどの型が必要かがわかります。Would は if 節には入りません： If I would have known は間違いです。

ルール： if、when、unless、as long as、in case のあとでは、未来のことを現在形で表します。起こると予想していることには when、起こるかもしれないことには if、if not の意味には unless、備えには in case を使います。

願望と後悔
願望や後悔は、今のことか、過去のことか？
ルール： Wish と if only は、現在のことには過去形、過去のことには過去完了形を使います。Wish に would を続けると相手の行動への不満を表し、it’s time のあとには過去形が続きます。

フォーマルな条件文
if がなくなっても条件だとわかりますか？
ルール： フォーマルな英語では if を省いて、had、were、should を文頭に置くことがあります。ただし、but for に名詞が続くと「～がなければ」（without）の意味になり、otherwise は if not の意味で、were to は未来のことを起こりにくく聞かせます。
